The dolls called "Five Finger Ching "were made in the Five Finger Hills region Mission in Canton
Province China around 1920. The dolls have molded painted cloth shoulder heads and lower limbs. Most of 2 painted teeth and open closed mouth. Some doll researchers think they were copied from the Margaret Chase dolls made in Rhode Island starting in the 1880's. The clothing is a replica of what was being worn in China at the time and is beautifully made. The child dolls were made in 9" & 17" versions. Adults came in 10" & 18". These dolls are often compared with the more widely know carved wooden head "Door of Hope dolls made at the Door of Hope Mission at Shanghai China from 1901 on. The dolls were made and dressed by girls at the missions to provide training and to teach self sufficiency.
